Common Characteristics of Cohousing

Authors and architects McCamant & Durrett in their book state:

Cohousing developments vary in size, location, type of ownership, design
and priorities. Yet in our research we were able to identify four common
characteristics:

1. Participatory Process

Residents organize and particpate in the planning and design process for
the housing development, and are responsible as a group for all final
decisions.

2. Intentional Neighbourhood Design

The physical design encourages a strong sense of community.

3. Extensive Common Facilities

An integral part of the community, common areas are designed for daily
use, to supplement private areas.

4. Complete Resident Management

Residents manage the development, making decisions of common concern at
community meetings.
