This book (almost a booklet) does offer a quick guide to an admittedly personal selection of about five hundred names each for boys and girls. Scholarly or not, the entry format could be slightly more consistent. The language of origin is sometimes listed, but often not. The pronunciation guide is not as described in the introduction. There are usually chapter and verse references to the most famous Biblical holders of the name--but not always. Male names are plentiful in the Bible, so the list has been pruned. Some names are too hard, some too odd, and some too freighted with negative implications. (On the other had, the exclusion of Ahab might have been a mistake: few moderns would know that Ishmael's captain was named after the most evil man who ever lived.) Female names are much rarer, and therefore the list has been enhanced with feminizations of masculine names, as well as place names and other terms. copyright Robert M.
