Divided into five sections, the first chapter is an introduction to cryptography and the history of its study, mostly, necessarily, in this century. Section one covers cryptography, concentrating chapters on DES (the Data Encryption Standard), stream ciphers and public key cryptography in three parts. Authentication, in section two, looks at digital signatures and a survey. Section 3, protocols, looks at proof systems and shared secret/control systems. Section four looks at both a survey and protocol failures in crypanalysis. Finally, section five looks at two practical applications, the smart card and treaty compliance verification. The essays are primarily theoretical, and the collection would make a good text for an advanced course. At the same time, most of the material also considers practical weaknesses and limitations of the concepts. copyright Robert M.
