The Encoded Archival Description (EAD) is an SGML "application" for filing information about archival materials and other collections. This book takes the EAD Document Type Definition (DTD), and presents it in a more "people readable" form. The content is still highly formal and technical. Those without a strong SGML background will find it very heavy going. However, the persistent reader will be able to pick up some interesting points, while slogging through the text. (In fact, for those not used to fighting their way through DTDs, it may be found that the introduction and EAD design principles are best understood after reading through the overview of the EAD structure.) There is some explanation of the tag library conventions, and a listing of attributes. The main body of the work, of course, is the library of EAD elements, and their descriptions. This really is merely a reformatting of the DTD. copyright Robert M. Slade, 1999 BKEADTAG.RVW 991008
