If you were very, very lucky, you could photocopy a photocopy of a photocopy of the commentary on the source code, prepared by John Lions for his class on operating systems. Today there are books on UNIX internals, but the ultimate resource is still the source code. And Lions' commentary is now readily available for the first time. UNIX 6th edition is, of course, no longer the standard. Lions' commentary does not address graphics or networking, because these were not yet a part of UNIX at the time. The basic UNIX kernel, however, is all there. In addition, UNIX has influenced the development of almost every operating system since then, so Lions' choice of UNIX as an explanation of operating system functions in general is well justified. Even if you are not interested in UNIX or operating systems, the UNIX kernel is the ultimate C program. Therefore, for UNIX buffs, operating system students, or C programmers, this book is well worth consideration. copyright Robert M.
