However, if you need one, this is the one to get. Boyce starts with "ultra basics" -- such as how to turn the machine on. The advice that turning on a Powerbook in "sleep" mode will lose all unsaved work is very valuable advice, and it doesn't appear in many other Mac starter guides. Chapter two covers "regular basics". Each chapter ends with a list of questions which check that you have read the important points. Chapters three and four cover the basics of word processing and spreadsheet use, while five's "software smorgasbord" leans heavily towards paint programs. Peripherals; track balls, printers and modems; are described in chapter six. Chapters seven, eight and nine deal with the System Folder, routine procedures and troubleshooting. Appendices A and B are a glossary and a list of "almost universal" keystroke shortcut assignments. Boyce's text is light and readable. More importantly, he starts with the really necessary basics and checks, via the chapter-end questions, that the reader is still on track. For those who do need it, this is the book. copyright Robert M.
