It is an introduction to the ideas behind the language, and the uses to which it might be put, without technical detail or references. It is intended for the decision maker who must give a pass or fail to projects without actually getting down to learning the language or using it. Most such works are little more than sales brochures. The authors of this book have managed to give a realistic and instructive background to Java in a reasonably small space. Background concepts such as platform dependence and client server are explained well. There are some weaknesses (the discussion of security carries none of the examples of implementation problems found so far), but, in general, this will give the hurried manager a rational picture. copyright Robert M.
