On the one hand, there are a number of academic texts which explain the theory and concepts behind operating systems. On the other hand, there is the proverbial exhortation to read the source code for UNIX (the one, true operating system). This book give you both hands -- an excellent conceptual presentation of the basics, plus the source code for MINIX. Depending upon your perspective, this book might be seen as the text for a first-level operating system course, with advanced topics to be dealt with later. Networking, concurrency, and objects are not dealt with in depth. It could equally be argued, though, that, like MINIX itself, the book is basic but entirely functional. Additional topics may well be frills. copyright Robert M.
