The structure of the Sybex "Up and Running" series limits the text to twenty chapters (referred to as steps) and gives an estimated time for each item. The progression is fairly logical, although putting terminal emulation second last is a bit odd. Some chapters are irrelevant, such as "Going Online", which is basically an introduction to CompuServe. Others, such as the chapter on Kermit, could have been included earlier ("Sending a File", "Receiving a File"). A substantial number of examples in the book have errors. Most of these are not related to the operation of ProComm, but getting dialling codes wrong, and using the wrong duplex on certain networks, are bound to confuse newcomers. Also, while it is perhaps unfair to expect Campbell to cover the shortcomings of many other authors in dealing with modems, the terse expectation that the user knows the machine's port assignments, and the belief that modem initialization will proceed smoothly, is unfair itself. A good starter *if* you don't run into problems. copyright Robert M.
