The emphasis here is on UNIX: in fact, there are sections of basic UNIX
material in the text.  C++ is the programming language being used to
demonstrate UNIX programming strategies and calls.  There is some C++ review
material in the early chapters, but the main body of the work covers UNIX and
POSIX APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and RPCs (Remote Procedure
Calls).  Some of the major topics covered are files, processes, signals,
interprocess communications, sockets, and multithreading.  There is a strong
concern for standards and portability.
