It's good documentation. The instructions are clear and understandable. The many screen shots give you ample feel for the program. On occasion, the description of certain functions (such as the keyboard resizing of windows) are not very specific, but presumably the intelligent reader/user can figure out the specific uses, once started. But it's still documentation. After an initial introduction to the interface, accessories and calendar, there are three major sections, each dealing with the word processor, spreadsheet, and database, respectively. Within each section are three chapters covering basic techniques, advanced topics (entitled, "Making the Most....") and specific projects. The projects chapter is akin to a "hands-on" tutorial, such as is used in the WordPerfect documentation. Chapter eleven abandons this format to talk about the communications part of the program. A brief portion of the chapter is devoted to general discussion of online communications in terms of what a modem is. As the communications section of Works is very meager, so, too, this chapter is very terse. Although the copyright date of the book is 1993, 2400 bps modems are still seen as the fastest you can get. (And, although modems are correctly defined according to bps, the book still talks about "baud rate" settings.) Although chapter eleven gives some directions on sending text files from the word processor, and using text received in the word processor, chapter twelve, which deals with integration of the various tools, doesn't mention communications at all. Two appendices discuss the installation of Works and specifications of the component parts. There is no reference. copyright Robert M.
