Sean Connery co-stars as long-retired lawyer turned professor Paul Armstrong whose anti-capital punishment stance is challenged by the grandmother of a man (actor Blair Underwood) on death row in a Florida prison.

During his research into the case at his father-in-law's newspaper, he's assisted by Delores Rodriguez (actress Liz Torres). She's introduced as the person who runs the "archives" and is a "news trivia expert." During this scene early in the movie she unrolls some squeaky compact shelving and removes a file for Armstrong's inspection. "Microfiche" or microfilm of newspaper articles, police evidence photographs and a prisoner correspondence file serve as research material for his investigation.

Diplomatics adherents will be interested in the clever plot twist in which a letter purportedly written by the real killer was planted years before in his prison correspondence file.
